Worldwide, an estimated 2.7 million people live with multiple sclerosis. Each one of them has a different story and a unique set of symptoms and issues. At the Rocky Mountain MS Center, we recognize that there is no such thing as a “one size fits all” answer to questions about effective treatment. Up to two-thirds of MS patients pursue some form of complementary or alternative medicine (CAM). Some CAM treatments are probably benign, some may be helpful, and others may be dangerous. Sorting the good from the bad can be a difficult task. That’s why the Center developed the CAM program. Today it is the largest of its kind in the world and a leading international resource for patients and professionals interested in CAM for multiple sclerosis.

The Center developed an interactive website to expand access to this information and add new data. Today ms-cam.org is a vibrant community of over 35,000 users from more than 70 countries. The website contains detailed reviews of over 100 dietary supplements and many additional subjects as well as the results of surveys taken by thousands of MS patients about their real-life experiences with numerous CAM treatments, such as vitamin D, fish oil, traditional Chinese medicine, special diets and a wide range of other topics. Through the Center’s CAM website, complementary and alternative treatment options rarely, if ever, assembled in one forum or as broadly shared and discussed are readily accessible to the medical community and the general public.

One of the earliest CAM projects was the publication of Alternative Medicine and Multiple Sclerosis (Dr. Allen Bowling). An updated edition was published in 2007. The book is an evidence-based review of more than 35 CAM modalities, from acupuncture to yoga.
